Grade 5, The Grammar School
"Written in the key of a minor for trumpet, trombone, and tuba, Lone Wolf, by 5th grader Ibby Hopkins, is an unearthly, empathy-inspiring tale. It is about a young wolf who, separated from her pack, in the deep winter, is forced to battle the elements daily if she wishes to see a new dawn. Throughout the piece, she has several brushes with death, whether narrowly escaping hunters or almost starving, and is pushed nearly to the breaking point by her traumatic experiences. Everything works out in the end, however, as our heroine, on the point of death, is reunited joyously with her pack. She is then nursed back to health and goes on to live a full and happy life."
