Adventures at the Arabian Carnival

Susie Francy

Grade 12, Leland and Gray High School

"Lights -- bright, flashing, colorful lights! And that laughter! In the beginning, a man slowly paces around the carnival, admiring every booth, ride, and attraction in sight. Suddenly, a clown ushers him into an unlit area of the carnival, mistaking him for an enemy of his. The man's sense of excitement quickly morphs into fear, but then dulls into a slow melancholy as he is interrogated about why he is at the carnival. The clown soon spots his true enemy, and the man narrowly escapes the situation. He is now free to roam the carnival as he was before, but the initial sense of excitement is no longer there; the thought of the carnival has become a bittersweet one."
