Frolic and Despair

Ian Morvan

Grade 10, Springfield High School, VT

"Frolic and Despair has become much more than a simple composition to me - it has transformed into a useful tool I have been using to express myself. You see, Frolic and Despair is based off of the last half year of my life. During this time, things have gone from free, fun, and energetic to dark, scary, and unknown. To model this, Frolic and Despair is in three sections. 1.) A fun, carefree section in which the instruments play around with one another. 2.) A dark section in which a viola solo pushes the melody into unbearable tension. 3.) A slowly building voice wraps up the piece with an eery/dark tone."
