Hello Annian! Or Vinna!

I’ll be working with you (both?) for this Opus. And I think this may be our first sibling piece…fill me in on what’s happening! Are you writing it together? If so, that’s awesome.

You’ve got a good description going too. Small technical note, you don’t have a hemiola going in the drums yet. A hemiola would have the strong beats on 1,3,5 in 6/8. With the snare on beat 4, you still feel is as a normal 6/8 bar. And inserting a hemiola or twelve further on in will be very cool.

I really like what you have so far. The harmonies are really nice, there’s a good groove, and the start of a good melody. I would spin out the melody fully with the trumpet that you start in m. 9. It seems like it only goes half way…maybe you just haven’t finished it yet? Also, consider that the first time you have your melody it’s almost by itself so it has a chance to be established very clearly. This could be the trumpet solo over just the piano and drums. Then add in the horn and trombone.

Last, a great technique is to build up chords measure by measure in different instruments until a big hit. If we look at measure five, we start building up that E major chord in the trombone. Then the French horn comes in in bar six…and try bringing in the trumpet in bar 7. This creates a natural crescendo of sound that leads wonderfully into the final chord - especially if each one is given an accent at their entrance.

I love what you’ve got going on so far, so just keep it up! This piece is going to be very, very fun.
