Hi Jackson!

My name is Alistair, and I'm so excited to be working with you on this new piece! I'm a composition student at Juilliard in New York City, and I got to visit Vermont for my very first time this past August at the Lake Champlain Chamber Music Festival. How many years have you been composing? Do you play an instrument?

First, what is your vision for this piece? What's it about? It's perfectly ok if you don't have a clear idea at the moment, but let's talk about the kinds of themes, moods, feelings, or stories you want to communicate in this piece. There are lots of opportunities, so I'm excited to hear the kinds of ideas you have!

Second, I really like what you've written so far, especially how you've created very cool individual voices in each instrument that come together very nicely. It's also great you identified your key of C Major. In your lower instruments (trombone and the left hand piano part), pay attention to your lowest notes, as it identifies the harmonies you use. For example, in m. 3, you have the trombone playing the notes of the chord A-C-E, but at the same you have the LH piano part playing notes of the chord F-A-C. Although, when they are played together, they tend to clash with each other. Try experimenting with either chord to create your harmony. You can certainly move from one chord to the other, but think about avoiding the use of the chords at the same time. Please let me know if you need more explanation for this!

You're off to a great start, Jackson! I'm really looking forward to talking with you more about your intentions and seeing more of what you compose with this piece. Keep up the great work!

-Alistair
