Brass Quintet

I'm working on creating a piece for a full brass group. I'm trying to create a composition that has moments that are suspenseful. I want to explore how a combination of multiple instruments can be more interesting than 1.

Hi Annika,

Great to meet you--looking forward to helping with your piece however I can.

First, congrats on having so much music written already--it's sounding good!

1. Mr. Lambert brought up a really great point to start with. The lowest and highest notes that instruments can play is important to keep in mind. Here's a link to a document that will help you to figure these out. While you work on the piece, you'll want to pay attention to the ranges listed as "actual sounding" on this chart. Use this to go through your piece and change things that don't fit within the normal ranges.

Here is the ranges chart:
www.composershop.com/public/Practical%20brass%20range.pdf

2. Sometimes you've written more than one note for an individual part, which won't be possible since you'll only have five performers. In these sections, you might consider moving one of the two notes to another instrument in the quintet.

3. More of a question: Do you have a favorite section of the piece so far? What is the most important (or most memorable) melody or theme? There are a lot of great ideas, and I'm wondering if it's possible to use your favorite parts more often so that there are more moments that feel familiar to your listeners.

Great work so far!
Justin

Thanks for getting your score going Annika! I think some things you may wish to check out in the resources are the "range" of each instrument. That means that a certain instrument like trumpet play and sound good only with certain notes. We could connect about it or possibly your online mentor will talk with you about it.

Thanks!
