Hi Maeve,

It’s good to hear from you! I’m glad you’re getting the website figured out. That’s wonderful that you’ve been so involved in traditional folk music and that you play fiddle, flute, piano and sing!

I listened to your beginning melody again and you’re off to a great start. I’m excited to hear what will come next. What are you thinking about for a text? Why don’t you see if you can add another 8 measures this week.

Let me know if you have any questions and if I can help in any way,

Hi Lee,
Sorry I didn't get back to you, it took me a while to figure out the website! You were definitely right about the folk music- my composition is definitely meant to be folkish, particularly Irish, sounding. I am really into traditional music, I play a lot of it but haven't written any yet. The trad music I play is mostly Quebecois, Cape Breton, Scottish and Irish. I play fiddle and have for almost four years, I play flute and have for a little less than two years, I play piano and have for almost six years, and I sing. I'm excited to try and compose, I have no experience with this sort of thing, so it should be a good challenge. Have a good time in Trinidad!

Dear Maeve,

I’m so happy to meet you! I’ll be your mentor for Opus 33 and I’m very excited to get to know you and your music! I’m a composer and performer (voice, piano and flute) and love many kinds of music - classical, jazz, and especially music from India, Africa and Brazil. I live and teach in Berkeley, California. I feel especially exited because right now I am writing to you from Trinidad, which is a small country and island to the south of Venezuela. I am here for their Carnival and to learn more about their wonderful Calypso music. I will return in about 1 week but will be able to receive your music postings here.

Great beginning to your composition Maeve and I really like your idea of composing for female vocals. Your haunting a minor melody plus the lilting 3/4 rhythm for me gives the feeling of a folk ballad. I like your “question” and “answer” phrasing with the question being measures (mms. 1-4) and the answer being mms. 5-8. I especially like how you climb higher in range in your “answer” and I also like your f#.

On the Music-COMP website - go to the “Resources” tab, then select “More Resources for Student Composers”. Check out the “Vocal Choral Writing” resource.

As we’re getting started working together, please tell me a little about yourself, how you like to spend your time, what are your favorite things in school and out, and how long have you been involved in music and what instrument/s do you play? This will help me get more of a sense of who you are and how that relates to the music you compose.

I can’t wait to see what you do next and great job so far!

Hi Maeve,

Thanks for getting set up!

I really like your theme and can really hear the A minor tonality. The F# is a great addition. A possible next step would be to fill out your instrumentation.

You should hear from your mentor soon.

Be well!

Mr. Lambert
