Hi Cam,

My name is Matt, and I’ll be working with you on your variation. I’m glad you got something up and posted, and let’s run with it!

I think it’s a strong start, and I like the idea of switching between that triplet 6/8 feel and the 2/4 feel. The open measures work really nicely too and it’s got all you need for a good melody. Here are some thoughts as you move forward:

I would take out the double tempo markings, and just choose one - could be either tempo, but stick with one.

Also, since this is just the initial theme, I think it can be tightened up a bit. It doesn’t have to be too long either! 8 bars is perfect. The flow is interrupted a bit in measures 3-4…I would consider adding another measure after the third bar, and then the 4th bar would become the fifth bar creating the start of the triplet section. The beginning coming back at the end of the melody is nice.

I don’t think the half notes at the end really match with what comes before it, so consider ending your theme after 8 bars or so. Or keep the first three half notes, ending on a C major chord after the oboe trill. That would work too!

You’ve got a good start, and you’ve given yourself a good melodic template to work with. Let me know if you have any questions, and keep writing!

-Matt
