Mentoring Program

This piece is inspired by the calm after the storm. The idea for the piece is branching off the grief I and my school has felt after 5 of my classmates died this fall. I wanted to capture that idea of feeling like theres a storm inside of you, and the peaceful feeling when that storm goes away.

Hello Julia,

I just wanted to congratulate you on all the progress you made with this piece. Even though it was not selected for Opus you should be very proud. There are so many submissions for the concert, it is impossible to present all the compositions that deserve a live performance. I hope to see you again on the mentoring site.

Best Wishes,

Mike Close

Hi Julia,

Thank you for sharing this revision. The dynamics really add a lot to the piece and make your musical intent more clear. You should also add slurs and articulations to further clarify the way you would like this performed.

To make that cascading section sound more chaotic and climatic you might consider a change in tempo, or an accellerando or two leading up to an 'a tempo' and the return to the opening material.

You might also consider a more drastic change for that middle section- perhaps a change to the relative minor (F)- this would make a real contrast with the rest of the piece if that's what you're looking for especially if coupled with some tempo shifts.

There is some dissonance that I am not sure is intentional on the first beat of 25- parallel seconds between the piano rh and the violin.

This is getting better and better!

Keep up the good work!

Hi! Sorry that it has taken me so long to respond to this-life got crazy! I just finished my piece and changed some things. m23-26 i tried to make this more of a fluid descending line-but I'm not sure if I'm completely satisfied with how its sounding. i think the problem is i really want this section to sound chaotic and be a climax for the piece, but i can't seem to get that through. Any suggestions for this? i also added a whole ending after measure 26. The other thing i changed is that i added dynamics throughout the whole piece!

Thanks :)

Hello Julia,

I was just checking in on your piece and I saw that the file had been shared. Thank you!

This is really lovely. Your chords are well chosen and flow from one to the next nicely. What a great moment at bars 14-15!

Your piece could really use some more dynamics, slurs and articulations- especially in the violin to make your intentions more clear to the performers.
So, for example, what is the violin's opening dynamic, and should the violin crescendo on that upward scale in m.12, and should it be slurred or separate?

At measures 23-26 I wonder about continuing the downward scales in the piano left hand in the low register, this could start on beat 3 of m. 24, landing on a low note on the downbeat of m. 25. And in m. 24 rather than repeating the same piano pitches in the same octave, maybe try bringing those down an octave so we continue with that cascading downward sound.

This is sounding very nice. When you next update your piece please include a description of what you have changed- that's always helpful plus it means that I will get an alert in my inbox that your piece needs a comment from me.

Keep up the good work!

Dear Julia,

So glad to see your post and thanks for the clear description of your intent for this work. Now, there's just one problem and it's that the score isn't Shared, so mentors won't be able to view it. Here's how to fix it.

1. Open your Noteflight Score.
2. Click on the Connect icon.
3. Change Sharing to "All site members" may view this score.
4. SAVE.
5. Post a comment that you've fixed the Sharing and you'll hear from a mentor soon.

Best wishes,
