Hello William,

I wanted to congratulate you on this composition. I'm sorry it was not chosen for inclusion in the Opus concert. There is simply not room on the program for all the fine pieces that deserve a performance. I'd encourage you to keep working on this piece and try to get it performed. I hope to see more work from you on the mentoring site in the future.

Best Wishes,

Mike Close

Hello William,

I was wondering how your piece was coming along. I haven't heard from you in quite a while. The deadline for final submissions for Opus 32 is next Thursday.

Best Wishes,

Hi William,

I think those chords flow much more smoothly now. Do you like how it sounds?

I'd like you to give some thought to how long the chords in the left hand sustain for. To me, I think it would work better if the chords in the left hand were sustained- so that chord on beat one of m.4 would be a dotted half rather than a quarter with three rests. Try it and see what you think.

Keep up the good work!

Hi Erik,
I changed the viewing so all people on the site could see it. Thank you!

Hi Michael, I changed some of the chords, and played around with it a bit. I also made it so you could see the score on noteflight. Thank you for the tips!

Hi William,

I wasn't able to open your noteflight score either- check with your teacher or follow Erik's instructions.

I was able to open the PDF though and play it on piano.

I really like it! Nice harmonies, melodies. A lovely, stately musical mood!

You need to have some smoother voiceleading in the left hand part. It's all root position chords (chords of stacked thirds). This jumping around between root chords can make the music sound choppy.

From one chord to the next, look which notes are shared- keep those notes where they are and only move where you have to. For example, in m. 1 you go from an F chord to a C chord. The shared note between those two chords is C. Try flipping the C in the C chord on beat 4 of m. 1 up an octave (so it's middle C in both chords). This will make the piece sound smoother, and as a bonus, it will be easier to perform because there is less jumping around.

Even when there are no notes shared between two adjacent chords, it's usually a good idea to avoid parallel root position chords so all the notes are not moving in one direction from one chord to the next. So, from m. 1 to m. 2 you go from a C to a D chord. Try flipping the A on beat 1 of m. 2 down an octave. This will make the movement between chords sound less chunky.

You are off to a great start! Keep up the good work!

Dear William,

I'm glad to see you've posted for Opus 32. Thanks for including both .xml and .pdf files. Unfortunately we can't see your Notelight score. Try this and if that's not the answer you'll have to check in with your teacher.

You haven't set permission for us to view in Noteflight. Here are the steps to take to fix that:
1. Go into your Noteflight account. Click on this score. Make sure you can see the score on the screen.
2. Click on Connect button.
3. “Who can access this score” - select All site members
4.. Select All site members can View. Anyone can search/browse to find it.
5.. Save.

Let us know here when you've fixed the sharing permissions and we'll get mentor feedback for you.

Best wishes,
Erik Nielsen
