Hello Myah,

I just wanted to congratulate you on all the progress you made with this piece. Even though it was not selected for Opus you should be very proud. There are so many submissions for the concert, it is impossible to present all the compositions that deserve a live performance. I hope to see you again on the mentoring site.

Best Wishes,

Mike Close

Hi Myah,

I enjoyed listening to this latest version of your piece. I think it feels more resolved now with the return to the original idea at the end.

The final version of your piece is due next Thursday.

So, first off a few score clean-up issues- the piano only needs one set of dynamics for both hands (unless the two hands are playing at different dynamic levels). So in a place like m. 4-5, you could just have the one set of dynamics between the two staves.

You should fix the rests at m. 6-7 in the oboe part. Use a half rest rather than four eights.

There are a couple consistency issues that may raise questions from your performers- at m. 6, bassoon, do you want a quarternote on the downbeat? It's all eighth notes in the following measure and it is very similar.

At m. 8 I assume you want the oboe and bassoon playing the same rhythm, articulated the same way- you should write these rhythms the same way so you get the same articulation from both instruments.

Is the dynamic level at m. 6, just after the repeat still forte? I'm confused by the crescendo in the bassoon at m. 9 to mp. Maybe that's a mistake...

You should probably add some slurs and articulations through out the piece to shape the music to sound the way it does in your head.

Oh, you should also add measure numbers.

Keep up the good work!

Mike,

I repeated the beginning of the song after I added the second part. I am going to add an ending.

When does the final copy need to be finished?
Thank you for your help,
Myah

Hello Myah,

I really love the new section featuring the wind quartet alone- it provides such a nice contrast. Great job!

Are you thinking of making this into a larger work, or is this about the right length as it is?

In either case, I feel like you should bring back the opening idea in some way towards the end- because that section was repeated, it stands out in the listeners mind- it feels strange to not revisit it after hearing it twice in the beginning. Perhaps you could come back to the original idea with a smaller group, maybe just the winds again, or just the piano, or some other combination of instruments that is not the full ensemble- that would create a nice tutti, soli, tutti, soli structure...

Keep up the good work!

Mike,

After the repeat sign I added four measures to my piece, I decided to feature just the quartet. What do you think of this new section.

Thanks for your help,
Myah

Mike,
Sorry I haven't responded in a while I had technical difficulties with my computer at home, but I am definitely adding another section. I think I might put the melody in bassoon.

Can't wait for more advice,
Myah
