HI Bethany,
Good work on your piece this term! Sorry you weren't chosen for live performance at Opus but I REALLY hope you'll write another piece next year.
Take care and be well!

Hi Bethany,
I really like how in measures 27 and 28, the the viola imitates the bass. They're not exactly the same notes but they're very similar and that makes it super interesting. I think your middle section (After measure 7) could have more of that. Since you like the first 7 measures (I do too) I would consider having them come back at some point (maybe 2 times). Then it could be a rondo form:
with the A part being measures 1-7 and the B and C sections being other music.

The deadline for submission is Thursday at midnight.
Have fun,

Hi Bethany! Just checking in with you. It seems like you've made some additions to your piece? Make sure to leave comments to let me know when you make changes so I know to check in. It's sounding good. What are your favorite measures in this piece. Can you choose 3 or 4 and tell me? I'll give you one favorite of mine: the first measure. I think it's a really nice melody. I also really like how that measure comes back in measure 8, I think it could come back more times, and sometimes in the bass part. It might even be cool to have the bass play that melody immediately following the viola (while the viola is playing the long note.) That's a nice way to start a conversation. Then choose another one of the measures you really like and repeat that one in both instruments.

Keep going and have fun experimenting. I think the best thing to do at this point is to choose your favorite measures and have them come back more and more

HI Bethany,

I'm Evan Premo. I'm a composer and bass player and I'm going to be mentoring your piece this term from here on out. It's a great start! As you edit and extend, consider the suggestions from Erik Nielsen

Quoting Erik Nielsen:
You have a very interesting little conversation going on between viola and bass. The viola part seems to use A as the keynote and the bass part seems to be in C.

I'd love to see more done with this conversation. What you can do is repeat bars 1-3 in viola right after bars 4-7 but with some changes and then do a modified repeat of 4-7 in bass after that. Then perhaps the two parts could play together for a while.

Bethany, this is a good start. Please think about what I've written as you keep working. I look forward to seeing more soon.

I love the concept of a conversation for this piece. It will be fun to see where it goes from here and how the conversation develops. Does it escalate? Do they have a fight? And how is it resolved. As you're working on small sections it's good to have an idea of the big picture as well.
