Thanks again for all the hard work you put into your piece. While it wasn't chosen for performance at Opus, that doesn't take away from all the effort you put into the piece, or the skill it takes to simply start a composition. You should feel proud of your work and I hope that you keep composing in the future. Don't give up! I hope to work with you again sometime!

It's great to hear from you. Wow! I'm really impressed! Your piece has come so far and it's sounding so fantastic right now. You should feel proud! I really love how you used the piano to make certain sections feel higher energy and more intense than others. I also think taking your short theme from the beginning of the piece and reusing it near the end was a really clever idea.

Hey Morgan!

Texture in music is the sound of everything that's happening at one point in time. So, for example, if you only had one or two instruments playing in a certain spot, the texture would be considered thin there. If you have many instruments playing, that would be an example of a thick texture. Hope that helps!

Hi Morgan,

Nice update! I like what you have so far! Each instrument part feels pretty unique in what they are doing, but it all blends together nicely.

Now, what's next? Well, my advice would be to focus on expanding the length of the piece. This is easier said than done, though! Try listening to the material you've composed thus far and try to imagine what could happen next:

- Does the music repeat itself? Personally, I like these first four measures and I think repeating them could be nice.

-Does the texture of the music change? Right now, the texture of the piece is pretty thick. Maybe you'd want to change that at some point! You could spend some time focusing on two or three instruments specifically, instead of the whole group.

-What happens to the melody? Does it repeat itself many times? Does it transform itself in some way? Do multiple instruments get to play it? Your melody is in the second violin, and it's very nice! I'm curious to see what you do with it!

Also, just a reminder - The piano can play chords (multiple notes at the same time). Think about how you might like to use this. The piano is effective both as a "background" instrument and as the lead.

Hi Morgan,

My name is Jake and I'll be your primary mentor for Opus 32! Thanks for getting started! I really like the idea of writing peaceful music, and having an image in your head (in this case, a river) will definitely help you with the writing process. As you compose, try to keep that image in mind. Doing that will help you to write music that more accurately represents that image!

As you continue to compose, try to vary up what's happening rhythmically. Right now, the rhythms that the instruments in your piece play are all pretty similar. That's fine for now, but if they stay too similar for too long, that could become tiring for a listener. Try experimenting with different rhythms that instruments can play over one another!

There are a few little visual things in your piece that we should fix right now. The order of the instruments on the score right now is incorrect. The instruments should be laid out from top to bottom in this order: Violin 1, Violin 2, Cello, Bass - the highest instruments start at the top, and then as instruments get lower in pitch, they are placed lower on the score. Also, right now your second violin is paired with a bass clef. It should really be in treble clef, like your first violin. In music, a clef helps set the written range of the instrument, and you'll find that the violin is a much higher instrument than the low-pitched instruments that are normally written in bass clef.
