Dear Lee,

I live with both my parents and my older brother. I have a dog named Sammy, a cat named Lily, and a gerbil named Pop.

I like to spend my time play playing games and sports. I have played baseball ever since I was 5 years old but I stopped a couple years ago because it wasn't really my thing. I also play Basketball and Soccer. I like to play board games with my family and video games with my friends. My favorite subjects in school are Math, and Music.

I have been involved in music for about 3 or 4 years now. I play the Trombone in my school band, but at home I have a Guitar, Ukulele, Keyboard, and an old Accordian that was given to me by my Great Grandma.

Dear Tyler,

I’m so happy to meet you! I’ll be your mentor for Opus 33 and I’m very excited to get to know you and your music! I’m a composer and performer (voice, piano and flute) and love many kinds of music - classical, jazz, and especially music from India, Africa and Brazil. I live and teach in Berkeley, California. I feel especially exited because right now I am writing to you from Trinidad, which is a small country and island to the south of Venezuela. I am here for their Carnival and to learn more about their wonderful Calypso music. I will return in about 1 week but will be able to receive your music postings here.

Great job beginning your piece, The Wish for Light, Tyler! Your minor melody effectively creates the mood you’re describing but also does have a searching quality to it, of looking to find the light. Also, your use of snare and bass drum do have a military band sound and gives a feeling of containment or structure, or maybe even that sense of being trapped that you described.

On the Music-COMP website - go to the “Resources” tab, then select “More Resources for Student Composers”.

As we’re getting started working together, please tell me a little about yourself, how you like to spend your time, what are your favorite things in school and out, and how long have you been involved in music and what instrument/s do you play? This will help me get more of a sense of who you are and how that relates to the music you compose.

I can’t wait to see what you do next and great job so far!
